Sell Gift Cards on Shopify POS

Whether you want to sell physical or digital gift cards, purchased as a gift or for personal use, we answer it all right here

Updated over a month ago

If you have a bricks and mortar location, or a popup business, or anything in between, you'll want the ability to sell digital or physical gift cards in person. Here's how to add the Givy POS app to your POS tiles, and some configurations you'll need to make before selling.

Enable POS Sales Channel

In order to sell a gift card at POS, you'll need to enable the POS sales channel for your default gift card product. Here are the steps required to do this:

Locate Default Gift Card Product

In Givy, from the dashboard, click the View Gift Card Products button.

When looking at the default gift card product, click the View Product link to open your Shopify admin.

In the Publishing section, click the menu and select Manage sales channels.

Select the Point of Sale channel, then save.

Finally, Save the product, and this step is complete!

Add POS Tile

To enable gift card tools at POS, you'll need to add the Givy app to your POS smart grid.

From the Point of Sale sales channel, open the Settings page, and click on Smart grid.

Make sure you have a smart grid here. If not, create a new grid and assign it to one or more of your locations.

From the Settings page, click on POS apps

Click on the Givy app

Click the Add button. If it is already added, try clicking Remove, then Add again

This should automatically add the Givy tile to your smart grid

Using the POS App

Now that you've added the Givy tile to your smart grid, open the POS app on your phone, iPad, or other hardware.

Loading the App

On your POS screen, you should now see the Givy - Gift Card Tools tile. You can move its position from your Point of Sale smart grid settings.

When you tap this tile, you'll be presented with three primary actions:

  • Sell Physical Card: use this if you have unloaded gift cards in your store, and you'd like to load it with a fixed amount for the customer.

  • Sell Digital Card: use this if you don't have physical cards, or if your customer would prefer receiving an email, or purchasing a gift card for somebody else.

  • Check Balance: use this to check the balance of any outstanding gift card.

Sales Channel Error

If you select one of the first two options and see this error message, you'll need to enable your default gift card product for sale on the POS channel. This is described at the beginning of this support article.

Sell Physical Gift Card

If you have physical gift cards, and want to load one with an amount and sell it in store, choose Sell Physical Card. If you don't have physical gift cards and would like to purchase them, we recommend this vendor:

When this page loads, click Set Value to set the amount of the gift card (to update these values, update the denominations of the gift card in Givy). Click the Scan button to bring up your gift card scanner, and scan the gift barcode or QR code.

Choose whether to set an expiry date for this gift card, then click Add Gift Card to Cart. You can complete this purchase, and the gift card will be loaded with the correct amount once the transaction has been marked as paid.

Sell Digital Gift Card

Don't have physical gift cards, or simply want to make it easy for customers to buy digital gift cards for themselves or as gifts? Givy makes it easy to sell digital gift cards in store.

From the Gift Card Tools menu, choose Sell Digital Card. Set the value of the card, choose whether it's a personal purchase or a gift, and enter the required information.

Once the order has been paid, Givy will create the gift card and send the appropriate emails - that's it!

Check Gift Card Balance

Another useful tool is to allow in store staff to check the balance of any gift card. Choose Check Balance from the gift tools menu, scan the gift card barcode or QR code, and click Scan.

This also works with Shopify gift cards which were not purchased via Givy
