How does subscription / membership gifting work?

Givy has a unique way of gifting recurring products - we recommend reading this to become more familiar with what customers will experience

Updated over a week ago

Givy is currently the only Shopify app to allow subscription and membership gifting for any subscription / membership app on Shopify!

Basic Configuration

This article assumes that you have already installed a subscription or membership app on your store, and have created at least one selling plan for one or more products on your store.

First, open the Givy app, and under Settings, open the Product Gifting tab.

Next, verify that your product gifting settings are accurate. These will impact gifted subscriptions as well.

Finally, enable subscription gifting, and verify a few settings.

  • Default order count: determines the number of orders customers will gift by default for regular and prepaid subscriptions. Customers can still choose to change this number in the gifting modal

  • Subscription name display: choose how selling plan information will be displayed to customers purchasing a gift. More information found in this article.

Customer Experience

When a customer wants to buy a subscription or membership as a gift, they will see the Send as Gift button on the product display page.

They will have an option to choose the type of recurring subscription they want to gift, as well as the number of orders to include in their gift.

Next, they will complete information on the recipient, including a custom message, GIF, personalized video, etc..

Here, they will also decide whether they want to include the shipping costs for this gift.

Customers can choose to add several gifts in the same cart sent to as many recipients as they choose. They can also add products for themselves in the same checkout.

Once the customer has completed adding items to the cart, they will go to the checkout. Each recipient will have a custom bundle created at checkout, which includes the full cost of the gifted subscription, as well as any shipping costs they've included in the gift.

Note that the gifted subscription does not require a delivery address. This is because the recipient will enter their address when redeeming the gift. This allows us to have multiple gifts in a single checkout, and doesn't require that customers know the recipient's shipping address.

Now, the recipient will receive an email with the gift details, or the customer will receive an email with a custom link that they can share or print and give to the recipient.

When the redemption button is clicked, or the recipient visits the special redemption link, they will see the redemption page.

At this point, the recipient can see their personal message, see what was gifted to them, and click the Claim Gift button.

This button will direct the recipient to a checkout which includes the subscription or membership product. The checkout will contain a dynamically created discount code which will discount the recurring product and shipping for the number of orders that were gifted.
