Multi-currency Gift Cards

Learn about enabling, configuring, and understanding how gift cards can be sold in multiple currencies using Givy

Updated this week

Givy's multi-currency solution allows customers to purchase and spend gift cards in any currency offered by you in your Shopify Markets settings. This solution offers several advantages, including:

  • Showing the gift card amount in the customer's selected currency

  • Sending all notifications to the customer in their selected currency

  • Showing gift card balances in the customer's selected currency

  • Maintaining the value of the gift in the customer's selected currency

  • Appearing in the customer's selected currency at checkout

Understanding Potential Risks

By enabling multi-currency gift cards, you acknowledge that the value of outstanding gift cards in currencies other than your default currency may fluctuate from hour to hour. Givy will continually update the value of outstanding multi-currency gift cards so that customers always keep the value of the gift card in their chosen currency.

As an example, if a store with a default currency of USD sells a CAD$1,000 gift card in Canadian currency, the customer may have paid USD$721.88 at the time of purchase. If the value of the Canadian dollar increases relative to the US dollar, the customer will continue to have CAD$1,000 in purchasing power, which may only be worth USD$710 when it is redeemed. As a merchant, you accept the risk that the value of outstanding gift cards will fluctuate up or down over time.

Configuring Multi-Currency Gift Cards

To get started with multi-currency gift cards, open Givy, and go to Settings. On the General tab, find the option for Multi-Currency Gift Cards, check it, and Save.

This will immediately enable the core multi-currency functionality. Emails will start showing gift card values in the customer's currency, and gift card balances will begin being updated on an hourly basis.

To allow customer to choose fixed denominations in their own currencies, learn about enabling and configuring the dedicated product page.

Showing fixed gift card denominations in multiple currencies

Now that multi-currency is enabled, you'll probably want to let customers shop for gift cards with fixed denominations in their own currencies. To enable this, you'll need to use Givy's dedicated product page. This page allows you to set fixed denominations for each supported currency, making the multi-currency purchasing experience much smoother.

Once this dedicated page is enabled, you should update any gift card links on your store to point to the dedicated product page URL. This is discussed in further detail here.
